The Mighty Miss Malone by Christopher Paul Curtis

Grades 5+
Historical Fiction

Deza has a close and loving family-even though it's the middle of the Great Depression, where there is no work, no money and not enough food.  When Deza's father leaves to find a job, the rest of the family must stick together to face extreme poverty with courage, wits, and even humor.

  1. I liked The Mighty Miss Malone. This book is about Deza Malone’s life during the great depression and how she learns to survive when she is kicked out of her home. Deza’s father is almost killed when the family runs out of food and he goes fishing. This book is historical fiction, but it is jam packed with adventure and sadness. I would absolutely recommend this book to everyone I know.

  2. I think this was a really good book that teaches kids about poverty, and the Great Depression in the 1930's. The main character is a girl named Deza Malone. She lives with her mom, dad, and her older brother, Jimmie, in Gary,Indiana. Jimmie has a really good singing voice, as what was said in the book. In one chapter of the book, Deza's teacher, Ms. Needham gives her a blue dress that's beautiful. I recommend that kids should read this book if they want to learn about poverty, history, and the Great Depression, one of America's darkest days.

One day she got kicked out of there apartment this book is a sad book but it is really fun to read because it's full of adventures. Deza's dad almost died because he went fishing and he got in a boat accident and he broke his lip. He couldn't talk to much because his lip was broken. Deza took care of him until he felt better. When Deza's dad felt better he got a job in Flint. Deza , her brother and her mom went to a little camp in Flint. Then Deza's brother got a job as a singer. Deza and her mom went to live in her friend's house for a while. I think you should read this book because it might connect to some people's lives and its a book full of adventure.
