Inside out and back again by Thanhha Lai

Grades: 4-6

Committee Annotation: Based on the author's own life, a ten-year-old girl experiences the culture shock of moving to America from Viet Nam; this story expresses both the humor and the heartbreak of this time in her life.

  1. I love this book because its not a book you'd read every day. It is poems, coming together, and making this story. The author wrote this mainly about her life, because, she too witnessed the end of the Vietnam war, fled to Alabama with her family and had a missing father. Thanhha Lai really captured Hà's emotions and feelings. It is really well written and I could read books like this everyday.

  2. I admire how the author wrote these little poems that are hard to understand at first, but after reading the next two pages you understand the story. I love the book because there are many parts of the story: my favorite is during the Vietnam war. When I read the book, I really felt like I was in the war. I also love the emotions and feelings there are in the story.

I also liked the part about the papa tree and that boy loved that tree like my grandma she loves trees.

  7. Great write-up. I just got this book from the library. I normally don't read novel-in-verse but I have heard such great things about this book.
