When life gives you O.J. by Erica S. Perl

Grades: 3-6

Committee Annotation: Zelly Fried wants a dog more than anything, so at the urging of her grandfather, during the summer before sixth grade, she takes care of a "practice dog" made out of an orange juice jug to show her parents that she really is ready for the responsibility, even though she is sometimes not entirely sure about the idea.

  1. This book was about a girl that wanted a pet and got to make a practice pet. My favorite character was OJ because it's a pet made of an orange juice container. You should read this book because it is really funny. I have never seen a dog made of an orange juice container!

  2. This book was about a girl who wanted a dog and her parents said "you are not ready." My favorite character was the girl because she loves dogs like me. I liked this book and you should read it if you love dogs.

  3. I read this book for book club a few months ago. It was a very good book about how if you work hard to get something you'll be rewarded. This book reminds me of how I'll do anything to get something I've always wanted. Zelly goes through alot to get her dog. Even carry around a dog made from an orange juice carton. Would you go to extremes just to get a reward?
